No sooner does the reader open the story than the feeling of settling-in, curling up in a comfy chair and relaxing, sets in. I read this sitting in front of a PC; certainly I wasn’t in a relaxed or comfortable status, yet the story immediately made me feel as if I curled up in a sweet armchair in front of a roaring fireplace, glass of cool beverage on the end table. That’s the kind of atmosphere Kit Wylde can create. When last we left Eleanor, she had been in her beloved new home a week. Still struggling with unbearable grief over her mother’s loss to cancer, Eleanor found the house more isolated than she expected, with a nearly constant hovering fog. Then the voice began, the odd noises, and the open window. She sees a figure in the fog, and later meets a man who calls himself Michael, claiming to be a neighbor, who demonstrates a definite interest in her. Now Eleanor, never a femme fatale, quickens the interest of the sheriff’s deputy who arrives to investigate; but as more weird events occur, she quickly learns that she’s probably very much on her own. The sheriff’s department is helpless to catch the culprit, even though the events began long before Eleanor’s home purchase. A gentle warning from a ranching neighbor doesn’t scare Eleanor too badly, until she has an experience which leaves her doubting her sanity. Kit Wylde leaves the enthralled reader on the seat’s edge waiting impatiently for the next installment. Poor Eleanor’s cliffhanger builds the suspense inevitably and unerringly, leaving us anxious to find out the truth about Eleanor, the house, Michael, and all the additional spooky situations involved in The Whispering House.
