College instructor Curt has already planned his summer sabbatical to work on his new novel, but if his requested grant doesn’t come through, finances will be tough. His
partner Lee is a pediatrician, but still neither is bringing in the “big bucks.” Curt suffers from the common writer’s difficulty, a partial story here, a novel chapter there, and
blames his heavy university course load.

Now the grant’s available, and he can spend the summer entrenched in his novel. Life is suddenly very good for Curt and his Chinese-American lover. The course of true
love runs smooth and so will the new novel—he thinks.

Sounds like a plan—but on the same day the grant notice is received, Lee’s very traditional Cantonese-speaking mother decides she must come to visit. If that isn’t enough
additional pressure, Curt must now face the possibility that all this extra free time available might not make a writer out of him after all.

Not just a reversal on the usual mother-in-law mess, Just What the Doctor Ordered peers into relationships: lovers, filial, and self. The novel also takes a hard close look at
what it means to be a writer, with writer’s block, with big dreams that don’t seem to materialize.
